Additional Information

Over this two day workshop canoe course, you will be completing necessary theory onshore at SWASH before paddling on Lane Cove River down to Woolwich baths where you will learn and practice canoe rescues. We will then return to SWASH for lunch before packing our canoes for our paddle over to Cockatoo Island on Sydney Harbour. Over the weekend, we will:

  • Learn and practice paddling strokes, towing with quick release hitches, capsizing, swimming 50m with PFD, safety and other considerations in planning a canoe/paddling trip.
  • Discuss risks you might encounter on both the Habour and in rivers, preparing for an activity including what scout paperwork is required and navigation markers.

All these skills contribute towards your OAS stages in canoeing. Don't forget to bring your up to date logbook.

During the activity, you will get wet. You will need to wear/bring:

  • whistle
  • logbook
  • any medication you require
  • sunscreen
  • hat
  • morning tea x2
  • Afternoon Tea
  • Breakfast
  • Dinner (think Hiking style camp dinner)
  • water bottle
  • sunsafe clothing (long sleeves recommended)
  • wear fully enclosed shoes that will get wet (no crocs, thongs etc)
  • clothes to change into if you get wet, and/or for sleeping
  • swimming costumes
  • dry clothes to travel home in
  • Remember this is an overnight camp - self catering and packing should be similar to if you were doing an overnight hike - however, you need to consider that you gear is going over water, and possiblly in the water. So, dry bags or small barrels are a MUST
  • You need to supply your own tent, sleeping mat and sleeping bag (liteweight preferred)
    • The Water Activities Centre will provide you with a PFD to wear on the day and a sausage sizzle and can of soft drink for lunch both days.
    • Water activities Leaders will be present overnight on Cockatoo Island
    • The evening will be a mix of camp cooking time, free time exploring the island and review time, with suitable games and activities.
    • The Crossing over to Cockatoo Island does come with inherant risks, and youth must be at suitable canoe/paddling experience to attend. SWASH support/safety boats will be present for this event.
    • Activities are subject to suitable weather conditions. If for any reason the event is cancelled, you will be able to rebook or obtain a refund. If you are unable to attend after registering, you will not be entitled to a refund.
